AI product management is the most in-demand role in tech right now. The role is not about knowing the algorithms; it is about knowing the user and the business, and translating between the two. The best AI product managers are the ones who understand what AI can and cannot do, and who can design products that use AI for the right tasks. The role is growing because every product is becoming an AI product, and every product team needs someone who understands the AI layer. The salary premium is 20-40% over traditional PM roles.

The transition from traditional PM to AI PM is not automatic. The skills that matter most are: understanding model behavior and limitations, designing for uncertainty and error, and building trust with users. The most important skill is probably the ability to work with data scientists and engineers to define the right metrics. AI products are measured differently — precision, recall, and error rates are as important as user engagement and conversion. The PMs who can speak both languages are the ones who get the job.

The challenge of AI product management is that the product is never finished. Models are constantly updated, and the product behavior changes as a result. The PM needs to manage the product roadmap and the model roadmap, and the two are not always aligned. The most successful AI PMs I have worked with are the ones who have a deep understanding of the model lifecycle and who can communicate the tradeoffs between model improvement and product stability. It is a role that requires both technical depth and business judgment, and the supply is way below the demand.
